Group exhibitions of works of art are usually based on a theme. This exhibition is unique in that it is comprised of a group on the list-serve, PAINT-L, that meets continuously on the Internet. This show is curated by Lillian Fitzgerald, an art consultant who is also a painter and herself a regular contributor to the ongoing dialogue. The subjects on our Discussion List are diverse -- techniques, computer art, help with computer technologies, sources for art supplies, lighting, photography, art history, esthetics, art education, everyday problems (i.e. mothers with young children working on their art), how to gain recognition for one's work, and many others. But all is not seriousness.

There is discussion about cooking, recipes, jokes, weather, movies, books -- but mostly art; artists coming together in a new way. The 'cybernetic coffee house' is a link around the globe; communication for artists living in remote areas as well as artists in the major cities, offering discourse on museum exhibitions, announcements of web pages and gallery shows.

This exhibition reflects a new phenomenon of our time; an advance made possible by the widespread availability of the Internet and e-mail. The discussion list is a collection of e-mail addresses which have subscribed to it. Thus members can send and receive e-mail within the group. The purpose of the list PAINT-L, is to provide a forum for painters to discuss all aspects of their art, including technical and aesthetic issues. Media can include, but are not limited to, oils, acrylics, and watercolor. It is an eclectic group of artists whose common ground , somewhat paradoxically, is not visual but art through ideas. How does such a diverse group have so much in common as people? Through daily communication only dreamt of, though not possible in times past, but enabled by the technology of lists on the Internet. What finally emerges, for most participants of this Discussion List, is a sense not only of connection, but of caring -- caring about the list, about the quality of the dialogue, about others -- a sense of community."
