STEVE SKINNER:
During the last eight years I have used the watercolor medium to paint urban settings of the infrastructure of Chicago's viaducts, roadways, and bridge structures. These paintings depict well traveled though scarcely noticed and often neglected urban areas. Architecturally timeless, yet unmistakably contemporary, the character of these landscapes represent function, and hard usage. Using this subject matter I formulate observation and awareness of these mundane places. By using contrasting dramatic values, implied motion, and in your face perspective I purposefully place the viewer in an intimate position with the work, to observe and interact as part of the scene. Thus, heightening the awareness of these apparently ordinary places, and so reinventing and transforming these scenes from the foreign though mundane, into places of vibrancy and curiosity.
