THE ARTISTS OF PAINT-L

The tradition of artists' clubs is a long one. What's different about this one is that most have never met face to face, yet they "talk" every day.  Their regular conversations have to do with critiques of new work, painting techniques, sales to patrons, the qualities of computers, printers, digital cameras, studio lighting, or light-weight easels, who has published the latest article, book or video and reports of family responsibilities or concerns.

Members of Paint-L have studio tours and on-line shows; sometimes use Babelfish to translate another language, buy each other's videos, books and puzzles.  They chose a group T-Shirt by voting for designs posted on the internet. They have a virtual bar where they go to celebrate good news and achievements, commiserate over struggles and disappointments and talk about non-art related topics -- yes, there are a few ;-)  All of these are normal art club activities; the difference is that Paint-L membership is global and this is done entirely through e-mail and the World Wide Web!

THE SHOW

Like all artists, the Paint-L artists paint, travel, sketch and photograph and paint some more.  Then they share with friends.

After a recent trip to France, Robin Walker posted about 30 photos of her visit to the Gardens of Impressionist painter Claude Monet with an offer for others to use her photos as the basis for paintings.  Conversation by email led to the possibility of a show of the resulting pieces -- a virtual show at the list's web site: http://paintl.org.  someone remembered having the first "real" show a few years ago and a hundred emails or so later, the plans were begun for REAL GARDENS/VIRTUAL FRIENDS.

With the influence of Monet and his gardens -- an environment he created for himself and his work -- the members voted for the show to include images from monet's Gardens and from their own environments around the world.  And they accepted the invitation of Annette Bush to send their garden paintings to Augusta -- Georgia's Garden City.

ANNETTE BUSH - Georgia
Augusta native Annette Bush gained her knowledge and love of watercolor painting while living in five Southern states and traveling to Japan.  She finds her recent excursion into oils on canvas to be just as exciting.  Since returning to Augusta, she has divided her time between painting, teaching and judging and supporting the community. Her invitation to the Artists of Paint-L to come to Augusta is only one example of her downtown efforts.  http://www.annettebush.com

DAVID R BECKER - Illinois
David R. Becker, MWS (Midwest Watercolor Society), Illustrator, Fine Artist, Author and Instructor.  Becker is the author of "Watercolor Composition Made Easy,"  published in 1999 by North Light Books. Becker's second book "How to Sketch with Watercolor" will be released December, 2002. MARGOT COMSTOCK - California
"After decades of editing and writing, the craving to make art came like a tidal wave.  So much to do, so much to catch up on.  What is my meduim? everything, let's try it all. Now, I love oils, and pastels. and watercolor, and clay.  And each one fits different ideas.  I want to do a painting of my ancient acting teacher, I think.  And mull, and look at photos, and then I wake one morning and know that his portrait must be a statue made in clay.  A woman full of passions quickly changing is captured in watercolors swirling to match the temperatures and moods that play on her skin.  That marvelous red striped pear wants grounding in brilliant oils or celebration in shouting acrylics."  Margot Comstock serves on the National Board of the Women's Causus for Art. mcart2002@aol.com

ELLIE CLEMENS - Massachusetts / France
American artist Ellie Clemens has exhibited in local, national and international shows. Ellie's subject is most often the landscape, but her paintings go beyond the ordinary depiction of the trees, the fields, the rocks and the grasses.  Instead, she treats these elements as areas of color, translating the landscape into nuances of tone and shape, light and dark, giving the viewer a new insight into the landscape itself.  Ellie's work can be seen in the USA at Art in the Heart of Maynard, Maynard, MA; Bilancia Gallery, Nashua, NH and in France at the Atelier de la Gare and at Caderonne Center in Esperaza, France.  http://www.ellieclemens.com

PAT CHAPIN - Texas
Pat Chapin is a self-employed commercial illustrator who took the "Paint-L Challenge" to paint a garden, even though she doesn't have one much beyond some colorful weeds!   Work more indicative of her style may be seen on her website, http://www.ThreeMermaids.com.

SUZANNE FERGUSON - California
I received a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1972. However, I've been an illustrator and commercial artist for most of my professional life. My career has included traditional and digital illustration, art direction, graphic design, scenic art, theme park design, greeting cards, book design, and multimedia. About a year ago, I got the fine art bug, started painting again, and began taking steps towards a career in that direction. http://www.art-by-suzanne.com

LANCE FUNDERBURK - Maine
A native of North Carolina, Lance has retired after teaching chemistry for 31 years at Washington and Jefferson College in PA. since then, he and his wife, Anne have moved to Maine where he has time to paint.  Working weekly with a plein aire group is one of the joys.  This painting is evidence of the fun he's having.  http://userpages.acadia.net/lfunder/

Kelchner is an award-winning fiber artist known for his art quilts, which have been displayed nationally.  His work incorporates both his passion for quilts and  his initial love - painting.  In addition to his creativity, he is also a recognized lecturer, instructor and quilt historian, having articles published in nationally distributed venues. Along with his own artwork, he maintains a representative collection of vintage quilts. His skills in the restoration of quilts have brought him clients with both family heirlooms and historically- significant works. RICK LENNEGAN - Washington D.C.
So there I was, several unexpected life situation changes going on at once (most of them wonderful), so I popped in to the list for the purpose mentioned above but was caught by the mention of a spray-fix that wouldn't dull pastell highlights, so I stayed on.  Then came Monet's garden (I dearly love Monet), and the show, and Augusta GA, and the probable dates of the show . . . lenegan@starpower.net

BARBARA LIVINGSTON - Ohio
For 20 years, Barbara was an award-winning Editorial Artist/Illustrator for the Cincinnati Post, Versatile in a variety of media as well as style, her illustrations depicted everything from Opening Day sports, to courtroom sketches, caricatures and elaborate feature pages.  In 1995, she left the Post to open Livingston Studio, Ltd. to pursue a lifelong dream of landscape and figurative painting.  She particularly enjoys working in watercolor, oils and pastel.  She finds inspiration in her love of nature which began in her childhood in the bluegrass country of Kentucky.  http://www.livingstonstudio.com

CHERYL McCLURE - Texas
As a child, like most artists, I was always interested in learning to make beautiful art. In 1986, when my children were all either in college or high school, I then decided it was my time to begin this wonderful challenge of learning to paint. After about 5 years of trying every medium in the 2-dimensional fine arts, I settled on abstraction as a primary mode of expression.  Currently, acrylic and mixed media collages are the media of choice. I don't expect these choices to remain static since to do so would stagnant my work. Exploration and the creative processes are so important and I expect to continue this roller coaster journey I began so long ago as long as possible.  http://cherylmcclure.com

NANCY MOORE - California
Nancy Moore lives in a small town in the mountains of Northern California, east of Eureka. Her computer expands her world and friends beyond the valley she lives in. Her art background includes a minor in art from San Jose State, and what is locally available.  She has been blessed to be able to take seminars from Jo Sonja Jansen, a prominent folk art painter.  She has painted in acrylics, oils and now is pursuing her interest in watercolor. http://www.pcweb.net/nmoore/hhart.html
